What's happening?
Developers broke ground on The Anchor at Mariners Inn in April 2023, a facility to provide housing for Detroit residents experiencing homelessness. The $24 million development will include mixed retail on the first floor, 44 single permanent “supportive housing” apartments, and 40 temporary recovery apartments on the upper floors for those receiving substance-use treatment. This 66,000-square-foot development will include counseling, case management, therapy spaces, a computer lab, areas for exercise and family gatherings, an art gallery and office space for Mariners staff. The building will be located across from the Little Caesars Arena.
According to Mariners Inn, the non-profit organization formed a partnership with Cinnaire Corporation in September 2019 to initiate a $25 million campaign for the development. The Anchor has received more than $13 million in low-income housing tax credits through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, $10 million in federal HOME funds and block grant funding and a $1 million grant from the McGregor Fund. Residents who come through the city’s homeless referral system, otherwise known as the “coordinated assessment model” (CAM) will receive first considerations for permanent residency.
