What's happening?

Kronk Gym plans to reopen at the renovated Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center in late 2025. Four apartment buildings are planned for the site of the former, demolished public housing project. Phase 1 will construct The Sanctuary at Brewster, a 52-unit facility for young adults at risk of homelessness.

Previously:

In 2019, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approved the $23 million sale of the former Brewster-Douglass public housing site to a Bedrock affiliate, following Bedrock's 2018 announced plans for a more than $300 million development on the property. The 784,080-square-feet site comprises multiple parcels between Beaubien Blvd., Winder St., Chrysler Dr. and Alfred St. in Brush Park. Plans include more than 900 mixed-income apartments, condos and townhomes, with 3.2 acres of public open space. The plan also calls for retail, hotel and an early childhood center. At it's peak, almost 10,000 Detroit residents lived in the Brewster-Douglass Homes, the first federally funded public housing development for African Americans. The city had been preparing the land for redevelopment since 2001 and completed demolition in 2014.
