What's happening?

The Detroit Food Commons, a $22 million, 30,000-square-foot-development, opened in May 2024 in Detroit's North End. The project was developed by nonprofit Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network (DBCFSN) and Develop Detroit. The anchor tenant is the Detroit People's Food Co-op, a full-service cooperatively-owned grocery store, for which planning began in 2010. The building also includes incubator kitchens, offices and event space.

DBCFSN signed a purchase agreement for the city-owned property in 2021. The project received about $2 million in public funding, $1.5 million in investment from co-op member-owners and a $100,000 Motor City Match grant.
