What's happening?

The $5.7 billion development of a new, 1.5-mile international bridge between Detroit and Ontario is underway, with opening targeted for 2024 after an official groundbreaking in 2018. The bridge is a public-private partnership being developed by the Bridging North America consortium, which will also operate it when complete. The major elements of the project are the bridge, set to be the longest cable-staying bridge in North America, Ports of Entry on each side and road work to connect the bridge with the Interstate system and I-75. The U.S. Port of Entry will be constructed in Delray between Fort, Campbell, Jefferson and Green. The project includes erection of multi-use paths to the bridge, which will be open to pedestrian and bike traffic. In early 2022, construction was underway on the Port of Entry sites on each side of the bridge. I-75 interchange work had moved to phase two, with ramp construction underway, as well as on the bridge towers, which will be 722 feet tall when complete. Bridge deck construction is expected to begin in 2022. Plans for the international crossing have been in the works since the mid-'00s. In 2017, Detroit sold land in Delray for the project and initiated a home swap program for neighborhood residents. A community benefits agreement established in 2019 includes other incentives like investment in community groups, home repair, job training and hiring requirements, streetscape improvements and more.
