What's happening?

General Motors Co. announced in 2024 it would move its headquarters from the Renaissance Center to the forthcoming Bedrock Hudson's Detroit development in 2025. GM and Bedrock planned to spend a year studying future uses for the sprawling office towers complex, and demolition was not ruled out.

Bedrock and GM released plans in November 2024 to demolish two of the RenCen's four smaller towers and convert large portions of the complex’s office and hotel space into residential. One of the remaining 39-story office towers would undergo a full residential conversion, adding 300-400 units, while the other would have its office space updated. The tallest tower, currently housing a Marriott hotel, would reduce the number of rooms on the upper floors, converting them into high-end residential apartments or condos.

The demolition and redevelopment are projected to cost around $1.6 billion. Dan Gilbert has pledged at least $1 billion, with GM contributing $250 million.
