What's happening?
The 2022 District Detroit plans call for redeveloping the vacant Fort Wayne/American hotel as an 11-story apartment building with ground-floor retail. Construction was scheduled for 2026-2028.
The historic building renovation was previously announced by Olympia Development in 2017 as part of its large-scale plans for the District Detroit "neighborhoods" surrounding Little Caesars Arena, which came with nearly $400 million in taxpayer subsidies. Rehab work was at the time scheduled to begin in 2018.
