What's happening?

Renovation of The United Artists Building, built in 1899, was announced by owner Olympia Development of Michigan in 2017 as part of plans for the District Detroit "neighborhoods" surrounding Little Caesars Arena. Construction was intended to begin that year.

Bagley Development Group, including Emmett Moten Jr. and Richard Hosey, is leading the $75 million rehab of the 18-story building into 148 units with retail space, which faced years of delays. Developers broke ground in spring 2022.

The project has secured more than $20 million in tax incentives, as well as loans from multiple government programs. Preleasing was slated to start in summer 2024, and the building's website listed an opening of fall 2024.

The attached, historic, Howard Crane-designed United Artists Theatre, which opened in 1928, was threatened with demolition as early as 2001. Demolition began in October 2022 and the space will be turned into parking for residents.
