What's happening?

Once the westside’s bustling (if smaller) counterpart to Eastern Market, Western Market was demolished in the mid-1960s to make way for I-75. The owner of the remaining parcel of land, Cathy Schneider, hopes to build a new market on the site with a shed that evokes the historic market, with 10,800 square feet for food vendors and a coffee shop. The project has run into funding issues — the project is estimated to cost $2 million, leaving a significant gap from the $75,000 Schnider has contributed from her personal savings. Schneider has been in conversation with the city and successfully advocated for the property’s rezoning. The City Planning Commission approved the site to be rezoned to B4, General Business District, in February 2023.
